But recently we updated the website with something new!

For Indie Developers

- Drag&drop images

Now a new and modern system to upload the screenshot for your game page! Just drag & drop!

- Select your Cover

A lot of indie devs asked "how the thumbnail was chosen"... Now it's incredibly easy! Just pin the image that you want to use as cover!

For Indie Lovers/Players

- new medals Challenges & Completed Challenges

We are released (and still testing) new medals for users that joins and complete the challenges!

Why Is indiexpo Down Today?

If you tried to visit indiexpo today, April 23rd, 2025, you may have been surprised to find the site temporarily offline. Don’t worry—this isn’t due to a cyber attack or any critical system failure. It’s actually a controlled downtime.

We’re currently performing a series of important backend updates and running an additional full-site backup. These technical improvements are crucial to ensure the platform continues to run smoothly, securely, and efficiently. To avoid any potential data loss or instability during these operations, we’ve decided to temporarily take indiexpo offline.

When Will indiexpo Be Back?

Our goal is to have everything back online by the end of this week. We’re working hard behind the scenes to complete the updates as quickly and safely as possible. Once we’re done, you can expect a more stable and responsive platform—stronger than ever before.

The 2025 started and it's time to reflect on the goals we set at the beginning of the 2024 and the incredible progress we've made together with our community. Our priority for 2024 was crystal clear: speed and operational excellence, and we're proud of what we’ve achieved so far.

Let’s break down how we delivered on our promises:

1. Speed as a Top Priority ⚡

Our commitment to making indiexpo faster and more responsive has paid off:

  • Server upgrades further boosted performance, ensuring a smoother browsing experience.

  • Online game sections optimized for mobile users, making it easier to enjoy games on the go.

3. New Ways to Reward Players and Developers 🏅

We introduced new user medals, encouraging participation and rewarding milestones. Players can also now track their progress through improved event leaderboards and access challenges directly from game pages. And new medals are coming!

4. Usability and Engagement Improvements 🌟

We rolled out several updates to make indiexpo more intuitive and engaging:

  • An advanced search system now ranks games by ratings, helping users find top titles quickly.
  • Improved language and content filters for personalized game discovery.
  • Markdown enhancements made content sharing easier and more dynamic.
  • ARIA attributes were introduced as part of our effort to make the platform more accessible.

Looking Ahead to 2025 🚀

We’re thrilled with the progress made during the 2024 but are already looking forward to what's next. Here's what we aim to achieve:

  • More Blog Content: We want to share more articles to keep you informed about updates, trends, and community highlights.

What is the differece between indiexpo and the other game platforms...?

Why to use indiexpo? Why I should upload or play a game there and not on other game platforms?

This is a very important question! And it is always in our mind! A lot of our meetings start just with this question!

Here it is the main answer with the unique features of indiexpo website:

  • Free Games Only: Unlike other platforms that also sell games, indiexpo exclusively features free games (full or demo). This approach ensures that attention is focused on high-quality games, not driven solely by profit. It makes indiexpo similar to YouTube.
If the Theaters are for the big Movies and YouTube is for "crazy videos"... Steam is for AAA Games and indiexpo is for "crazy indie games"!
  • Multilingual: While other platforms are primarily in English and may only provide translated site text, indiexpo tailors game recommendations based on the user's location and language preferences. Similar to YouTube, personalized homepages are created for each user, accommodating language diversity with translations available in 20 languages.
  • Fan base: indiexpo emphasizes building a dedicated fan base for game developers. Through user subscriptions and the ability to send updates via email, the platform fosters direct developer-player relationships.
  • Rankings: Unlike platforms such as Game Jolt, Kongregate, or Itch.io, indiexpo offers comprehensive game rankings based on ratings, followers, and downloads. These rankings are filterable by genre, enabling players to personally select games while providing developers with insights into their competition.
  • Marketing: Itch.io and Steam have limited promotion reach within their own domains. In contrast, Indiexpo actively assists developers in promoting their games. The platform regularly publishes videos on YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook and other new and smaller social media, highlights interesting games on game-making and player forums, collaborates with YouTubers, blogs, and gaming websites, all without charging developers.
  • Indiepad: indiexpo's Indiepad application has been a source of satisfaction, as it allows for the creation of a completely independent and free virtual console. Many developers have contributed games and coding assistance to this initiative.
  • Community: indiexpo fosters a strong sense of community among game developers. They frequently engage in helpful discussions, offering suggestions, commenting on each other's games, and collaborating with site administrators to improve the platform. Interviews with developers and user stories, sharing experiences and advice, are available on the indiexpo blog.
  • Volunteers: While other platforms have larger paid teams, Indiexpo compensates through the help of volunteers. The strong sense of community mentioned earlier has led to collaborations with users who have shared ideas and projects. Additionally, YouTubers who analyze and play games from the site, graphic designers, event organizers, and supportive individuals have all contributed. Volunteers have also assisted with translations, allowing the site to be available in various languages. They helped us also to create new API to link the games with the new features of the website!
  • Updates: Being the underdog serves as motivation for indiexpo. They constantly seek to make improvements, simplify processes, enhance SEO, and improve site speed. Unlike larger platforms that face challenges with slow updates, Indiexpo is agile and responsive.
  • Gamification: indiexpo employs a points (gems) and leveling system that transforms the site into an enjoyable gaming experience. Players can earn medals, unlock achievements, and climb the leaderboard, making interactions more engaging.
  • Challenges: While other platforms often focus on game jams and competitions for developers, indiexpo caters more to gamers. The Challenges in the Events section encourage players to complete objectives within specific games to earn extra gems. New challenges are introduced monthly! It is a very new feature!
Start and enjoy your experience on indiexpo website!

Priority for 2024

Hello guys, we are delighted to share with you our plan for 2024 and to outline some of the initiatives we've already undertaken. This year, instead of focusing on comparing the statistics from 2022 and 2023, I want to concentrate on the future and the operational excellence that awaits us.

Our unquestionable priority for 2024 is speed. We must ensure that our website provides a smooth and responsive experience for all our users.

To that end, we're working on several initiatives:

  • Improving the mobile-friendliness of the site (which may include launching an app)
  • Creating a quicker and more intuitive contact area for our staff (already operational)
  • Implementing a new section on the homepage dedicated to online games, optimized for mobile devices.
  • Introducing new medals to reward games and players achieving significant milestones.

Additionally, we'll continue to actively engage players through the creation of Challenges and the introduction of new exclusive games, always with the aim of providing them with an unparalleled gaming experience.

We are confident in what the future holds for us and grateful to have such a talented and dedicated community! Together, we'll accomplish great things!

How indiexpo is growing up during this 2023!

Here's the detailed description of indiexpo's statistics for the period from January 2023 to June 2023, along with considerations on how to improve these statistics in the second half of 2023:

User Demographics:

During the first half of 2023, indiexpo witnessed significant engagement from young developers and gamers. 42.83% of users fall within the 18-24 age group, clearly demonstrating indiexpo's appeal to young enthusiasts of free indie games. This is a positive sign for the indie developer community, indicating that the games featured on the site are capturing the interest of the younger generation.

Age & Genre

An noteworthy point to highlight is the increasing female user base compared to previous years (even if the male user base is still the biggest). But this growing female participation can be seen as the result of inclusivity initiatives and a broader diversity of content offered by indiexpo. This positive trend should be encouraged and promoted in the second half of 2023 to further expand the female user base.

Top 10 Countries for Visits:

Top 10 Countries
indiexpo is a global platform attracting developers and gamers from around the world. Among the countries significantly contributing to the number of visits, China is in the first place, followed by the United States, Italy, Russia, and Germany. These data reflect the increasing popularity of free indie games on an international scale and the significance of a platform like indiexpo as a promotional platform for indie developers.

To fully grasp the meaning of these data, it's valuable to consider the historical context of the gaming industry. For instance, China has witnessed explosive growth in the gaming sector in recent years, driven by the increasing availability of mobile devices and an evolving gaming culture. This has made China a key market for indiexpo, and it suggests that this trend could continue to grow in the second half of 2023.

Traffic Source:

The majority of visits (67%) come from direct traffic, indicating that indiexpo has built a strong online presence and a base of loyal developers and gamers who visit the site directly.

Traffic Source

This is a positive sign as direct traffic often indicates a strong and recognizable brand. In the second half of 2023, indiexpo could further focus on retention strategies to maintain and increase the number of direct developers and gamers.

Top 10 Social Sources of Visits:

Social media plays a significant role in driving traffic to indiexpo. Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Reddit contribute substantially to the traffic, representing 25.52%, 25.16%, and 20.76% of visits from social media, respectively. These social platforms not only provide a channel for promoting indie games but also influence the developer and gamer communities.

It's important to note that these social media platforms have a crucial role in the gaming world, influencing trends, the discovery of new games, and the sharing of gaming experiences. In the second half of 2023, indiexpo could seek to further solidify its partnerships with these social platforms by collaborating with content creators and promoting quality indie games through these channels.

Devices Used:

The increase in traffic from mobile devices, constituting 42% of the total, suggests the importance of optimizing the site to provide a seamless user experience on smartphones and tablets. This trend may continue to grow, driven by the increasing adoption of mobile devices worldwide.

Devices

An interesting point to note is that many developers are responding to this trend by uploading HTML5 games to indiexpo. These games can be easily played online on mobile devices without the need for downloads or installations. In the second half of 2023, indiexpo could further encourage developers to create mobile-optimized games, thereby enhancing the site's appeal to the growing mobile audience.

The most used mobile devices on indiexpo

indiexpo's statistics for the first half of 2023 indicate positive growth and development opportunities. For the second half, the site could focus on inclusivity strategies, collaborations with major social media platforms, and mobile optimization to continue expanding its user base and supporting the indie game developer community. indiexpo is clearly playing an essential role in promoting and sustaining the free indie game sector.

Win Prizes by Completing Exciting Quests!

During this first semester, besides fixing a few things (such as the Advanced Search, which now has a better design and a new filter for searching games by year), we have finally released a new important feature that we are excited about: Quests!

What are the Quests? How do they work?

We have revolutionized the Events section!

You can go to the event page, "Accept" the mission assigned (which can be to "find an object", "survive as long as possible", "get a certain number of points", etc.), then play the game and receive 100 gems as a reward!

Why this new feature?

Many sites similar to ours often organize events/jams for developers. We didn't want to follow this path, which has already been widely used by others (also because in the end, a contest can be organized very well on a forum, social media, or elsewhere). We wanted to focus more on games and players.

How to create missions linked to your own games?

The fundamental thing is that the game is playable online. Then just contact the staff (by email or on Discord) to enable the scoring system and create linked missions!

A more effective notification system has not yet been integrated, but every day we are refining and perfecting this feature!

Try to win some missions and let us know what you think!

We are sure that players will love this new gaming experience, where they can accept fun challenges and win gem prizes!

Never Back Down! The latest updates!

Hi guys! Recently another games-platform started to mail intimidations, to paralyze our services, supposing several violations.

Luckily we found very good (senior) partners that suggested us what to do. We didn't suspended our website and those "intimidations" were retired.

This 2022 is very crazy!

But probably you are here for the updates...let's start!

Latest Updates:

- you will see your own (last) comment on top in the game-pages commented;

(so you can follow the discussion easily and fastly)

- improved the design of the pages for wide screens;

(We fixed yesterday ther last graphic-bugs, tell us if you see something strange)

- Added Greek language;

(But still not Greek games)

- Added new cards when you level up.

We didn't think they would work so well... the filters (redesigned)

We didn't think the filter would work so well!

Throughout November and December we reintroduced a feature (redesigned): filters per games.

We strive to work towards site simplifications, and creating a minimalist design.

We included features to promote smoother user operations. This resulted with positive user feedback.

This is incredible!

We will continue to work and improve this function!

Other recent news:

  • Fixed a bug that would send you an email notification about your comments
  • added the Greek language to the site
  • translated the email notifications

It was not the best way to start the new year...

When things go well, no one ever thinks that it could all go wrong...

2021 had just ended, with the team on Discord, we were discussing how this year we had obtained more subscribers and views than the previous year. There were talks of new features being added, improvements being made and how they can impact the site in 2022.

Everything was going smoothly, and we did not suspect that the unexpected was just around the corner. The first days of January the site began to have problems. The server appeared unreachable, and the site is inaccessible. We start the "standard maneuvers" and after a couple of postponements, everything was back to working.

Two days pass and the site is down again. No changes had recently been applied to Indiexpo, which made it difficult to understand what was going wrong. However, this made us understand that the problem was at the server level and not at the code level.

The "standard maneuvers" didn't help this time, so we were lucky enough to have the site programmer come to the rescue. He finds a strange connection between the site and the server. He doesn't quite understand what's going on, but he finds a way to recalibrate some settings and the site is back up and running.

But after a day the site is down again, and the error seems even more serious.

Chat started to think that the site is closing. We received emails and reports of users who were unable to access the site for days. Talks on social media had everyone guessing to what was happening on the website.

We contacted the service that sold us the server. They reassured us by saying that the problem does not depend on them, and that they do not detect problems, but the site is still down. This time it cannot stay up for a few minutes without crashing, and the programmer no longer knows how to address the faults. This was seemingly impossible.

The service staff who sold us the server propose a hardware replacement. Components that should improve the performance will be presented and replaced.

We accepted and waited anxiously.

Then the news...

We are contacted again, and we are told that during the replacement of the various components, the hard drive with all the games and data appeared to be damaged.

We immediately check the backup, and we realize that it is not up to date at all and the material that we could lose would be substantial. So understandably, it resulted in the closure of the site.

The programmer explains that if the hard drive still turns, maybe we will be able to recover some files. If it does not turn, we should go to a specialized centre to try to recover the data. However, the latter option would be very expensive, risky, and extremely difficult.

It was agreed that the work would be carried out in two attempts.

The first attempt is made.

It fails...

This 12-year long work could all end. The beginning of 2022 can mark the end of a site that is now part of our daily life.

We begin to contact a specialized centre (with exorbitant costs) and we begin to think if we should start over (impossible) or change the site entirely. We were totally disoriented and helpless.

The second attempt begins.

Success! All games and data are recovered!

The site is put back online, the backup restored and enhanced.

indiexpo still lives!

Thanks guys for being close and supporting us!

We are back to stay!

Let's do it!

New Languages, redesign and tags!

Hi! Did you see the latest updates on indiexpo?

We never stop and recently we improved the website to be more useful for gamers and developers!

At first we translated indiexpo into two new languages: Filipino and Thai!

With the help of several users from the indiexpo's community we translated the latest words and now also the younger developers and gamers, from Thailand and Philippines, can use the website easly!

It's also redesigned two areas of indiexpo, Subscriptions and Your Games (for game developers)

Now you can see the latest news and updates of the followed games and to left a comment faster!

Another new feature is about the Comments Area of the Game Pages. Now you can tag another user when you left a comment and he/she will receive a notification about it! And added a new anti-spam system!

And there are other small features like the possibility (finally) to change your password and email in Settings Area and to see the new UI of the Level Area!

And more has coming!

Stay tuned and play indies!

What is the plan for this new year?

Hi guys! Welcome back!

During the last year the website had a great boost. The reasons were probably two. The first one was a lot of players, all around the world, locked at home that were looking for free games to play. And the second one was big influencers in China that discovered and showed indiexpo on their channels.

So we thought "don't stop me now!"... and we updated the website with new features and fixed several bugs. We introduced Verified Accounts, the Share button, improved our home page and totally changed the Subscription Area.

As you can see, now you can visit the new Subscription Area to check for updates about the games you’re following. It’ll be like having your own, personal news feed!

But what are we planning for this new Year?

We were the first videogame website to also think about middle eastern countries, translating the website and changing its design so that it’s easier and faster to navigate - also by young developers and players from those countries. We want to continue to update and improve it during this year!

We are also going to work to create new automatic checks in order to prevent spambots and spam. The site’s design will be improved, we’ll add new details and animations, as well as new notifications about your progress on indiexpo!

What’s more, we’re also going to add a new area for developers and players, something totally new and never-before seen on websites like indiexpo! Stay tuned!

Continue to be a part of this community, watch the latest videos and follow the best game developers, all on indiexpo!

Verified Users!

On indiexpo website everyone can upload a game. And several time the users upload games that are not theirs.

It is not a problem if it is a free game and you want to archive it and/or you compile correctly the form with the right author.

But how to see if the game is uploaded by the "true" author? Internet is a mysterious place...

Now we added the Verified Users!

imscared uploaded by MyMadnessWorks

The badge of the Verified User will be showed not only in the "author area", but also near the username in the "comments area"!

Are you interested to have this badge? Now there is still no official form to compile, but if you are interested, you can contact the Staff using the email or on our Social Networks!

Have a nice day!

Share Button, New Languages, New Exclusives and something new Everyday!

What have been the latest changes made to iindiexpo?

It’s been mostly bugfixes, optimizations, expansions, and some small changes!

Without further ado, let’s see what’s changed!

- Share Button

We added a button that allows to share your game much more easily and rapidly on a lot of social networks to every game page. It even comes with a QR code to print or scan, to share with anyone around you!

- More automatic checks during uploads

More automatic checks were added when a game developer tryes to create a new game page. Many kinds of checks were added, the most important ones put in place to avoid spam. Now, if a game developer tryes to make a page with an external download link, the site will automatically check if there are other games with the same external link. Furthermore, every user will be able to create a maximum of two game pages per day.

- The navigation bar has been improved

While before there were both a vertical and an horizontal navigation bar, now it’s all been included in the vertical one, which will allow you to move between different areas much more easily and rapidly.

- Added slovakian and persian support

Two new languages were added, once again thanks to the help of the indiexpo community! Adding persian is a remarkable milestone, as it makes indiexpo one of the first game hosting websites completely translated in an arabic language! We’re still fixing the site architecture relative to this new language (we gotta flip everything right to left)!
